The COVID-19 pandemic has affected industries and businesses across Australia. Now that we are starting to look to the future, it is important to understand which industries and occupations are going to be in demand. As Prime Minister Scott Morrison has explained, “The jobs and skills we’ll need as we come out of the crisis are not likely to be the same as those that were lost.”
Opportunity awaits Australia’s VET sector in China
China will need international partners to design and deliver vocational education and training. Australia’s VET sector is highly developed and Australian colleges are well regarded in China. There are opportunities to deliver courses in-country or as a pathway to study in Australia.
Apprenticeship numbers continue to decline across Australia
The number of Australians starting an apprenticeship or traineeship has dropped by 11 per cent, with the COVID-19 pandemic causing a significant impact on the administrative, construction and food industries.
VET in school delivery on the rise
New data from NCVER in VET in Schools 2019 shows the number of school students undertaking vocational education and training (VET) as part of their secondary education has risen by 2.2 per cent to 235,800.
Government support for Australian Apprenticeships
A large number of businesses with apprentices and trainees on JobKeeper are planning on, or considering, cancelling them when JobKeeper ends. Over 50 000 apprentices and trainees are at risk of cancellation. This is in addition to the almost 15,000 Australian Apprentices who have already been cancelled.
